What makes us so unique?
At KGIC, we have classes to suit all language levels from beginner to advanced. Regular and accurate testing is done in each class to ensure that you are in the appropriate level. When you have achieved a specific set of goals, you are moved up to the next class.
Curriculum and Methodology
KGIC has its own comprehensive curriculum with its own textbooks and supplementary materials focusing on the interactive approach and student-centered classroom learning environment.
English Essentials: Level 1-3
NEW IN 2011: Career World English: Levels 4-6
Career World English is a new and experiential way for intermediate and advanced students at King George International College to learn English. CWE has been custom designed to suit the needs of KGIC students. It is a combination of real world situations, communicative activities, contemporary subject matter & academic application.
We believe that after studying the foundations of the English language at the beginner and intermediate levels (up to level 3), students need an opportunity to find real-life, professional ways to build on what they have learned and get to that next level of understanding.
Our new advanced Career World program gives students from levels 4-6 the chance to become English speaking professionals that are ready to take their skills into career-specific programs or the world of work.
Career World Grammar
– This grammar course takes students away from traditional textbook grammar and introduces them to a wide variety of situations in which to use the grammar they learn. This course highlights the need for conversational grammar and exposes students to many of the subtleties and exceptions that are often hard to grasp.
Career World Reading/Writing
– This class focuses on reading and writing that can be applied to everyday situations. Reading online and writing online are both avenues that this course explores. Though there will be some focus on traditional academic preparation such as research and essays, it also teaches students how to read and write for social events, work situations and travel.
Career World Listening
– Listening to the radio, people you meet, movies, lectures, and in work situations can be very challenging. There are accents, slang and idioms everywhere. This class focuses on recognizing both formal and informal vocabulary applicable to a variety of situations ranging from personal and professional life to academic endeavours. With each unique topic, comes a greater ability to listen and respond effectively.
Career World Communication
- Communication involves a lot more than speaking and vocabulary. In this intensive communication class – new vocabulary, slang and idioms will be a large part of the learning process. Group discussion, debates and intensive speaking opportunities to build fluency and the ability to feel confident speaking to native speakers, whether in a university classroom, the workplace or a fundraising event, shapes this class.
Who should study Career World English?
Everyone!
CWE is designed with the modern day student in mind. English needs to be useful, applicable, and interesting; it needs to function in a global environment; it must be used at work, it must be used at home, and it must be used at school.
On Fridays school finishes at 2:30 at all campuses and we finish the week with Pronunciation and Accent Reduction. This class emphasizes the importance of pronunciation as well as reducing accents for clarity.
AFTER SCHOOL OPTIONAL CLASSES
At KGIC we offer After School Classes from Monday to Thursday over and above our students' regular full-time studies. After School Classes take place Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday and allow dedicated students an extra opportunity to learn English.
Important Note: Please note that After School Classes change according to availability, campus location and demand.
ENGLISH LOUNGE:
This class is for level 1, 2, and 3 students.
English Lounge is an after school class for beginner to intermediate levels. With one teacher and a small group of students, Lots of feedback and error correction is available. Students are able to learn idioms, slang and everyday phrases in an intimate, friendly environment.
Speak Like A Pro
This class is for Communication 4 - 6 students.
Speak Like a Pro is an elective for upper intermediate to advanced level students*. It is designed to focus on fluency, accuracy and vocabulary that will prepare students for the OPIc test or to improve their overall speaking abilities.
Monologue Day and OPIc test
KGIC is the Canadian test centre for the OPIc test (Oral Proficiency Interview – computer). OPIc is a test taken over the internet and it measures a student's oral proficiency through a series of questions and then answers provided by the student. The answers are recorded and sent to a marker, who analyzes and sends back a certificate with the student's oral proficiency rating. The test is gaining popularity in countries like Korea, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, etc. as employers (like Samsung, LG) try to gauge potential employees speaking abilities. During the test, students are given a 1 minute allowance to answer questions.
The idea of the KGIC Monologue Day is to have activities that get the students speaking for 1-2 minutes without stopping – hopefully increasing their oral fluency. The monologues students give in class can also be used for monthly communications presentation marks and to prepare them for the OPIc test.
