CHILDREN’S ESL

KGIC incorporates Canadian Public School materials in our Children’s ESL Programs by making use of BC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL books and ESL guidelines. This approach allows students to develop their English, so that the ability to speak, think and express themselves in the classroom all become an academic part of their communication skills.

Children ESL Program:
(6-13 years old)

The level structure is based on 2 months of curriculum per level:

Listening, Speaking & Phonics

Level 1: Beginner

Grammar

Level 2: Novice
Language Arts - Reading & Writing Level 3: Low-Intermediate

Academic Contents: Math, Science, Literature, Drama, Art, Social Studies

Level 4: High-Intermediate: Required to enter Bridge schools
Level 5: Advanced
Level 6: Content Based Academics

Curriculum

While still focusing on the fundamentals of ESL, such as Listening Comprehension and Pronunciation, Grammar, Reading and Writing, and Conversation, the Children’s ESL program will also provide a secondary emphasis on Canadian school materials and skills.

We teach English through thematic units based on grade-level science, social studies, mathematics and art in the Children’s ESL Programs.

Within e ach level, the Children’s ESL program will devote a substantial amount of lesson time towards exploring Canadian materials and texts while continuing to follow the basic format of the four fundamental skill areas.

Speaking English

Through a comprehensive program, students will develop their English, so that speaking, thinking or expressing themselves in English is a natural part of their communication skills.

The re info rcement of a strict English Only Policy so that students are focused solely on practicing English throughout school hours increases the speed by which students develop their English communication skills.

Evaluation and Testing Outline

  • Weekly tests of Spelling, Vocabulary and Listening Comprehension
  • One test every unit in Grammar, (Minimum of one every two weeks)
  • Bi-weekly writing assignments
  • One specially organized contest (Speech, Spelling, etc. ) per month
  • Weekly Progress Reports

Special Activities and Outings Guideline
We offer fieldtrips to public and private schools, to attend academic classes with Canadian students.

Extra activities such as fieldtrips to the library and watching English movies help to integrate children to Canadian culture as well as teach them "real" English that they might not learn from a standard grammar text.

The guidelines for special activities are as follows:

Occasional Library visits
Movies
Fieldtrips
Scholarship/Awards Ceremony

NOTE: Outings for Children may vary and are optional. Any costs involving have to be paid extra. Usually a fieldtrip does not cost more than CAD$ 20.
